Arnold and Son

John Arnold, from whom the story of this company begins, came to light in 1736 in Cornwall in the family of a watchmaker, so he inherited the profession along with his talent from his father. Having mastered all the knowledge that a parent could pass on to him, John went to the Netherlands in 1755, where he also found a mentor in watchmaking, and at the same time with his professional skills, he also hones his German, which helped him very much he has a common language with one of his most influential future clients, King George III.

So, after spending 2 years abroad, Arnold returns to his homeland, where he first works with his father in his workshop, but by 1762, John was already raising enough funds to open his own studio in London. In the capital, John gradually and confidently gains the reputation of a gifted master, and more and more wealthy clients rush to his workshop every day. Two years after the discovery, the gained fame allowed Arnold to approach the court of King George III mentioned above and present his invention to him: a miniature clock with a repeater function, embedded in a luxurious ring. The monarch liked the slacker and he became interested in the master's other works, so it is not surprising that after John obtained such an eminent person as his client, the whole elite of society, wishing to successfully emphasize the taste, rushed to him.

In 1770, John was ready to present to the world his first marine chronometer, which received the highest marks from experts and thanks to which Arnold received £ 200 for the further development of his business. John's invention also won the sympathy of sailors who had to work directly with him, as this chronometer was the choice of Admiral Harland on his journey to Madagascar in 1771, and Captain Cook preferred this device to conquer the Pacific Ocean, undertaken a year later.

1773 again gave the public a surprise: Arnold introduced to the market his first pocket chronograph, which in the same year went to the North Pole as part of the equipment of Captain Phipps. In 1788, one of the new chronometers of Arnold again set off on a journey, this time around the China Sea with George Robertson.

In 1796, the son of the founder, John Roger Arnold, joined the family business before that he had a thorough internship at the famous Abraham-Louis Breguet, a friend of John the Elder. It was with the arrival of his son John and renamed his company to Arnold & Son. Together, in 1796, the father and son managed to make the brand the leading supplier of watch movements for the needs of the Royal Navy, and 3 years later, John Sr. died, leaving the company in the care of his offspring.

John Roger was able to adequately continue the work of his father’s life, he received several patents for his invention, including a patent for a watch factory system without using a key, but in 1843 he left this world, and Charles Frodsham buys the brand, after which her story covered with impenetrable fog up to our time.

Now Arnold & Son continues its more than two centuries of tradition: the quality and accuracy of the brand’s products are still at the height, which is not particularly surprising given the fact that all watches of this brand are still made by hand by the best craftsmen in the Swiss city of Le de fo. By the way, the company feels considerable pride for the scrupulousness with which the caliber is selected: unlike competitors, Arnold & Son refuses to install the same caliber on different models of watches, preferring to develop a new mechanism every time it is planned to launch a new model.
